A Bomb Calorimeter is a laboratory instrument used to measure the calorific value (heat of combustion) of solid and liquid fuels. It operates by burning a weighed sample in a sealed stainless-steel bomb filled with oxygen under controlled conditions, while the heat released is measured through a surrounding water jacket.
Principle of OperationThe sample is placed in the combustion crucible inside the bomb. The bomb is sealed and charged with pure oxygen at high pressure. Upon ignition, the sample combusts completely. The heat released is absorbed by the surrounding water, and the temperature rise is measured to calculate the calorific value of the sample.
Main ComponentsCombustion Bomb: High-grade stainless steel pressure vessel
Crucible: Holds the test sample
Ignition System: Electrical ignition wire and terminals
Calorimeter Vessel: Water container surrounding the bomb
Thermometer / Digital Temperature Sensor: Measures temperature change
Stirrer: Ensures uniform heat distribution
Oxygen Charging System: For pressurizing the bomb
Determination of calorific value of coal, coke, fuel oil, biomass, food samples, and other combustible materials
Quality control in power plants, cement industries, refineries, and research laboratories
High accuracy and repeatability
