The reciprocating pump test rig consists of a single-acting or double-acting reciprocating pump driven by an electric motor through a crank and connecting rod mechanism. The pump mainly includes a cylinder, piston (or plunger), suction valve, delivery valve, suction pipe, and delivery pipe.

Water is drawn from a sump tank through the suction pipe when the piston moves backward (suction stroke). During the forward movement (delivery stroke), water is pushed into the delivery pipe through the delivery valve. The discharge is controlled using a delivery valve fitted on the delivery side.

The test rig is equipped with:

• Pressure gauge on the delivery side

• Vacuum gauge on the suction side

• Measuring tank with a scale to determine actual discharge

• Energy meter or wattmeter to measure input power

• Tachometer to measure speed of the pump
