A hot air oven is an electrically operated laboratory device used for dry heat sterilization and thermal processing of materials. It functions by circulating heated air at a controlled temperature within a thermally insulated chamber to ensure uniform heat distribution.

The oven consists of a double-walled construction, where the outer wall is made of mild steel and the inner chamber is constructed from stainless steel to resist corrosion. The space between the walls is filled with insulating material such as glass wool to minimize heat loss. Electric heating elements are positioned at the bottom or sides of the chamber to generate heat.

A thermostatic temperature controller maintains the desired operating temperature, typically ranging from 50 °C to 250 °C, with sterilization commonly performed at 160 °C for 2 hours or 170 °C for 1 hour. A circulation fan or natural convection system ensures even distribution of hot air throughout the chamber.

The hot air oven kills microorganisms by oxidative damage to cellular proteins and dehydration of cells, making it suitable for sterilizing glassware, metal instruments, powders, oils, and petroleum jelly. Safety features such as over-temperature protection and a heat-resistant door gasket are provided to ensure safe operation.
